The journey from Addis Ababa to the Omo Valley is about 1,000 km. By car, the trip usually takes around three days. It is a long journey, but the destination is incredibly rewarding.
The Omo Valley is a fascinating place to visit and photograph. Many communities have maintained traditional ways of life for generations. Their lives have been shaped by the land and have seen relatively little outside influence.
Most families keep livestock and practise seasonal farming. Hunting and gathering also remain important in some communities. People collect food and traditional medicines from the surrounding nature.
For this journey, I brought my trusted Hasselblad 503 camera. I carried both black and white film and Kodak Portra film. These cameras and films allowed me to capture the people, landscapes and atmosphere of the Omo Valley.
The experience gave me an opportunity to document the daily lives and traditions of the people I met. Their culture, environment and way of life made a lasting impression on me.
